Albanian flag, Albania, country, nation, Albanian nation
The flag of Albania is a red flag with a silhouetted black double-headed eagle in the center. The red stands for bravery, strength, valour and bloodshed, while the Eagle represents the sovereign state of Albania. The flag was established as the national flag of Albania when the country gained its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912.
Albania declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912, but was conquered by Italy in 1939 and occupied by Germany in 1943. Communist partisans took over the country in 1944. Albania allied itself first with the USSR (until 1960), and then with China (to 1978). In the early 1990s, Albania ended 46 years of isolated communist rule and established a multiparty democracy. Today, Albania is increasingly being discovered by visitors from all over the world, but there are still many places largely untouched by tourism. It is an extremely diverse country which hides a large number of beauties, with an incredibly welcoming population and where, contrary to popular belief, we felt completely safe!
